| The forces between the STM tip and the adsobate are exploited for the lateral positioning of adsorbates. | |||||
|
The procedure of lateral manipulation involves first positioning of the tip on top of the adsorbate at normal imaging distance. Then the tip is moved closer to the surface, thereby increasing the force between tip and adsorbate. If the force is high enough, the adsorbate will follow the tip during movement to the final position. There the tip is retracted again. |
